Born on April 10, 1918 in Oblong, Illinois, she was the daughter of Jesse James Gilman and Elsie Amanda (Smith) Gilman. On June 19, 1937 she married Clyde Virgil Newton and he preceded her in death in 1970. On December 19, 1952 she married Roy Ernest (Jim) Hill and he preceded her in death in 2008.

Pauline attended George Rogers Clark High School in Whiting, Indiana; was a waitress at the Tic Toc Café and RobinAire Lanes; clerk at Montgomery Ward; secretary at Heath Tri-County Roofing; and a housewife. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Oblong; CMH Auxiliary; Oblong American Legion Post #219 Auxiliary; Republican Women; TOPS/KOPS; KJU Class member at First Christian Church; Crawford County Election Board; and also on the Oblong Township Board.

Pauline was a very special, talented, giving lady. She enjoyed singing and dancing and when called upon by friends and/or relatives would provide some sort of entertainment for their activities such as her magician act as “Paulini the Great”, her New York New York dance with top hat & cane, and of course, playing Mrs. Santa at Christmas time. No matter where she went, she had candy to pass out to those she met. She enjoyed crocheting and crafts and shared her talent with others as well. A very loving wife and mother and her church activities were important to her.

Survivors include her six sons and daughters-in-law: Fred and Joan Newton, Spring, TX; Jesse and Linda Newton, Ballwin, MO; Art and Brenda Newton, Maryville, IL; Jimmy Dean and Maurine Hill, Tom and Laura Hill, and Bill and Barb Hill, all of Oblong, IL; two daughters and sons-in-law: Bonnie and Paul Heath, Harlingen, TX; and Trudy and Jay Seaney, West York, IL; 31 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, two husbands, three grandchildren: Christopher Newton, Connie Sue Elliott and Christopher Kohlrus; four brothers: Bill, George, Ralph and Jim Gilman and six sisters: Chloe, Ruth, Cina, Gladys, Mildred and Lucille; and a step daughter Mary Irene Pittman.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Christian Church, 206 North Range, Oblong, IL , with Bro. Dee Wolfe and Pastor Tim Hill officiating.
