Mr. Francis “Leon” Mitchell, age 95, of rural Hutsonville, IL, died Monday January 16, 2017 at 7:50 AM at Ridgeview Care Center, Oblong, IL, following a long period of declining health.

Born March 17, 1921 in Hutsonville Township, Crawford County, IL, he was the son of Lester Leon and Ona (Brown) Mitchell.  On November 13, 1951 he married Iwana (Brashears) and she survives.

Leon served in the Medical Corps during WWII as a Lab Technician. He is a member of the American Legion Post, Pittman-Loughery #742, Hutsonville, IL; member of the Grand Prairie Christian Church, Robinson, IL, where he served as a Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Song Leader and Deacon.   He worked on a cattle farm in Colorado and was a farmer in Crawford County, IL, retiring after 60 years.  He was also a former member of the Crawford County Farm Bureau.  Leon enjoyed working with the Hutsonville Historical Society’s Annual Open House at the cabins.

He is survived by his wife, Iwana Mitchell, Hutsonville, IL; a daughter and son-in-law, Stacie and Stephen D. Regier, Piper City, IL; a grandson, Kevin Regier, Piper City, IL along with several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; three sisters, Celia Jean Mitchell, Ruth Miller, Edytha Roberts and a special niece, Lilah Carson.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday January 21, 2017 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Valerie Vermilya officiating.  Visitation will be Saturday January 21, 2017 from 11:00 AM until the time of service at 2:00 PM at Pulliam Funeral Home, Robinson, IL.  Burial will follow in the Newlin Cemetery, rural Robinson, IL with full Military Graveside Rites.

Memorial donations may be made to the Grand Prairie Christian Church or to the Hutsonville Historical Society with envelopes available at the funeral home.

Dear Iwana, So sorry to hear about Leon. My prayers and thoughts are with you. I know what it is to lose your spouse. Just let the Lord comfort you and be there for you. It wil be hard but you are strong and I know you can get through this. We love you and miss you. Love, Katie and Jason

I am so very sorry to hear of Leon passing away. Bobbi & I would have been at the visitation if we had known. We loved Leon and love Iwana so very much. Our fondest memories are at Grand Prairie where we had so many sets of grandparents. :)
