Robert L. (Bob) Wiman, age 82 of Mattoon, IL formerly of Robinson, IL, passed away in Mattoon on October 28, 2016 following several years of failing health.  Born September 21, 1934 in Licking Township north of Oblong, IL, Bob was the eldest son of Frank W. and Norma K. (Green) Wiman, both of whom preceded him in death.

Bob graduated from Robinson High School with the class of 1952 as a star athlete in football, basketball, track, and summer baseball leagues.   He received a football scholarship to play for the University of Illinois where he was a member of the Big Ten Championship football and baseball teams of 1953-1954 and 1954-1955. After a serious knee injury halted his football playing career, Bob finished his college degree at Eastern Illinois University where he served as an assistant football and baseball coach.

His high school coaching career spanned 37 years including the Illinois communities of Oregon, Robinson (1961-1963), Kankakee, and Mattoon. During these 37 years, Coach Wiman mentored and inspired numerous young athletes to develop their skills. After 28 years at Mattoon High School, he retired in 1994. In honor of his 37-year coaching career as an outstanding baseball coach, Coach Wiman was inducted into the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1995.

Bob was an avid motorcyclist and enjoyed cycle trips with his friends. He continued his love for athletics as a fan of professional sports. He was a member of several community organizations including being a life-time member of the Robinson Elks.

He is survived by two brothers Warren and wife Loretta Wiman of Newton, IL and Ferrell and wife Mary Lynn Wiman of Mount Vernon, IL, two nieces, Kristy and husband Joe Recchia and their children John, Michael, and Maddie of Erie, CO and Amy and husband Tyler McPherson Wiman and their children Jack, Alex, and Anna of Englewood, CO.

Bob was preceded in death by his long-time companion Judy Elliott and is survived by his extended family: Jennifer Elliott and her daughter Lynley; Brad and wife Jaime Elliott and their children Alex and Reaghan; Rob and wife Toni Elliott and their children Amanda, Stephanie, Bobby, Dakota, and Tanner; and ten great-grandchildren.

Graveside services for Bob will be conducted on Thursday November 3, 2016 at 1:00 PM at Harmony Cemetery, rural Oblong, IL with Bro. Bob was a great inspiration to anyone who knew him. I was friends with the family and coached with and against Bob and learned so much from his teachings. He will be missed.

Coach Wiman will forever be in my sweetest memories of high school in Mattoon. He taught my Driver's Ed class and actually was my Behind the Wheel teacher. We gave him such good nature grief and he made class so enjoyable. My friends and I called him "Boom Boom". I think he worried about my driving - ha! However, I have been driving for 40 years and have not had a wreck. He did a great job! Much loved by all who knew him. God bless you!

I worked with Bob at Mattoon High School. He was a concerned teacher and a good coach. I'm sorry for the loss of a good man.

Bob, Coach, Mr. Wiman, however you were know, you were a great influence on so many of us "kids". You were my Driving Instructor, but I remember that you told me since I drove to school every day without a license that I just had to drop Debbie Price off at home and drive back to school and he would pass me.You had great sense of humor but we also knew beneath that gruff exterior was a sweet teddy bear. And I'm very glad that you were there for Judy and Jenny Elliot. Jenny will always hold a special place in my heart and I know she loved you. So RIP Bob you've earned your rest.

Coach Wiman was one of the first HS coaches to believe in me, and I will never forget that. Rest in peace coach, and I hope you know how much we all appreciated you.
