Richard Eugene Vernia, 63, Oblong, IL passed away at 5:10 PM ET on Friday June 5, 2015 at IU Medical Center in Indianapolis, IN from numerous long-term medical issues.

Richard was born on October 15, 1951 in Robinson, IL the son of John Joseph Vernia and Catherine Fern McIntosh Vernia. On August 1, 1970, he married Alma Rosalie Spencer who survives.

Richard stated out as a construction worker and then worked as a Decoker at the Marathon Oil Refinery in Robinson, IL. Richard was a member of the Robinson High School Class of 1969. He enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, visiting with friends and family, gardening when he could, playing games on the computer, chess and making people laugh. Most of all, he enjoyed spoiling his granddaughter Erica, which always put a sparkle in his eye and a smile on his face. He was so very proud of her.

Richard is survived by his wife Rosie Vernia, Oblong, IL; two sons and daughter-in-law Richard Scott Vernia, Oblong, IL and Ross Spencer and Ruth Vernia, Oblong, IL; his granddaughter Erica Nicole Vernia, Oblong, IL; two brothers and sisters-in-law George and Carol Vernia, Danville, IL and Robert and Jan Vernia, Carmel, IN;  two sisters-in-law Jackie and Gary Murdock and Agnes and Pete Chiasson all of Oblong, IL; brothers-in-law Larry and Katie Barnbrook, Rockville, IN, Gary Barnbrook and Laura Wilder, Oblong, IL and Danny Barnbrook, Robinson, IL; father–in-law and mother-in-law William and Lela Barnbrook; 18 nieces and nephews, with Garrett Murdock being like one of Richard’s own boys.

Preceding Richard in death were his grandparents; parents; and a sister-in-law Clara Dunlap.

Graveside service for Richard will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday June 13, 2015 at Berlin Cemetery south of Oblong with Bro. Phil Boyd officiating. It was Richard’s wish that there be no visitation. The family request that in lieu of flowers an expression of sympathy may take the form of a contribution to Disabled Veterans National Foundation with envelopes at graveside service or may be mailed to Pulliam Funeral Home P.O. Box 121 Oblong, IL 62449. Pulliam Funeral Home, Oblong, IL is in charge of arrangements.

I am so sorry for your loss, if there is anything I can do give me a call. I feel so sad for you and your family. There is nothing I can say that will help you take away the hurt, but remember I am here if you need me.
