Mr. Raymond L. Smith, age 78, of Hutsonville, IL, died Monday December 29, 2014 at 9:20 PM at Crawford Memorial Hospital, Robinson, IL, following a heart attack earlier in the day.

Born December 13, 1936 in Hutsonville, IL, he was the son of Lee and Inez E. (Chapman) Smith.  On September 18, 2004 he married Helen I. (Gapa) Slussar and she survives.  

Raymond served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1975, and held various jobs locally following his retirement from the military. While serving in the Air Force, Raymond saw atomic tests in the Marshall Islands and was in headquarters US European Command during Berlin and Cuba Crises in the Earl 1960’s; following that he served 10 years in the Pentagon’s office of the Secretary of Defense and served a tour in Saigon, Vietnam.  He retired back to Illinois after achieving the rank of SMSergeant. He was a life member of the Air Force Sergeants Association; E.M. Coulter Post #69, American Legion, Robinson, IL; and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars since 2000.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Helen I. Smith, Hutsonville, IL; sons and daughters-in-law, David A. and Penny Smith, Marshall, IL; Daryl A. and Ella Smith, Speedwell, TN; daughters and son-in-law, Mrs. Norma Lloyd, Effingham, IL; Nancy and Terry Cessna, Sumner, IL; step children, Joe and Darla Slussar, Robinson, IL; Kelly and James Brown, Robinson, IL; brothers and sisters-in-law, William R. and Wanda Smith, Marshall, IL; Walter and Sara Smith, Lady Lake, FL; sisters and brothers-in-law, Catherine R. and Billie R. Ulrey, Marshall, IL; Betty and Jerry White, Champaign, IL, Doris Smith, Leesburg FL; twelve grandchildren and nine step-grandchildren; nine great grandchild and six step-great grandchild as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Robert Smith and a son-in-law, John Lloyd.

Funeral service will be Saturday January 3, 2015 at 10:30 AM at Pulliam Funeral Home, Robinson, IL, with visitation being held Friday January 2, 2015 from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, rural Martinsville, IL with Military Graveside rites provided by VFW Post #4549, Legion Post #69 and AM VETS Post #33.
