Mr. Joseph A. “Joe” Johnson, age 77, of Newton, Illinois, went to be with his Lord, Wednesday April 24, 2013 at 11:56 PM at his residence after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Born May 20, 1935 in Jasper County, Illinois, he was the son of Tony W. and Floris L. (Wetherholt) Johnson-Zimmerman.  On October 3, 1958 he married Ilene (Igleheart) and she survives.  He was employed by Illinois Central Railroad for 44 years as a conductor; served in the U.S. Army from 1955 - 1957; was a faithful member of the Latona Church of Christ, Wheeler, Illinois.  Other memberships include Master Mason, Winterrowd Lodge #664, AF 7 AM; Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of St. Louis, Belleville, IL; AINAD Shrine Temple, St. Louis, Missouri; Jasper County Shrine Club; American Legion Post #20, Newton, Illinois; Township Trustee, Wade Township, Jasper County, Illinois for 8 years.

Joe loved spending time with his family and friends, especially taking his kids and grandkids on vacations and cooking for a get-together.  In Newton, he supported his grandkids during their athletic events as Newton Eagles and Saint Thomas Saints.  While attending athletic events or out in public, Joe never met a stranger. When at home, he could be seen mowing his lawn, working in his weed-free garden, or keeping his truck spotless.

Survivors include his wife, Ilene Johnson, Newton, Illinois; mother, Floris Johnson Zimmerman, Newton, Illinois; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary Joe and Joyce Johnson, Newton, Illinois; Scott Ray and Shelly Johnson, Newton, Illinois; daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Ann Renee and Dane May, Newton, Illinois; grandchildren, Will, Ty and Sydney May; Dylan and Taylor Johnson; Kristin Henry; Erica and John Johnson; brothers and spouses, Ronald and Tanya Johnson, Newton, Illinois; David and Mary Johnson, Newton, Illinois; sisters and spouses, Janice and Ken Gary, Cookeville, Tennessee; Judith Addis, Olney, Illinois; Nancy Johnson, Newton, Illinois and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Joe in death were his Father, Tony W. Johnson; mother-in-law, Irene Ballew; brothers-in-law, Larry Cox and Jack Ballew and sister-in-law, Rita Ballew.

Funeral service will be Saturday April 27, 2013 at 10:30 am at the Latona Church of Christ, Wheeler, Illinois with Pastor Nate Hagan officiating.  Visitation will be Friday April 26, 2013 from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Latona Church of Christ with Masonic Funeral Rites at 7:00 PM.  Burial will be in the Trexler Cemetery, rural Newton, Illinois.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lincolnland Hospice or Latona Church of Christ with envelopes available at the church.
