Life Legacy

Mrs. Elizabeth "Jane" (Lionberger) Monts, age 91, of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California, formerly of Robinson, Illinois, died Wednesday May 2, 2012 at Scripps Hospital, Encinitas, California, following a long period of declining health. Born April 2, 1921 in Crawford County, Illinois, she was the daughter of Edmund Ray and Cora Pearl (Smith) Lionberger. On June 5, 1948 she married Allen S. Monts and he preceded her in death in 2009. Jane was a homemaker; graduated number one of a class of 101 from Robinson Township High School, then attended Eastern Illinois State Teachers College (Now Eastern Illinois University), graduating with honors in 1943 with a Bachelor of Education Degree. After graduation, she worked as a secretary to the Director of Teaching and Placement at the college until her marriage in 1948. Jane was very active in the P.T.A. for eleven years, receiving Honorary Life Membership. After becoming a member of the Torrey Pines Christian Church in La Jolla, California, she became active in the Christian Women's Fellowship and was also Sunday School Secretary from 1976 to 2005. In 1995, she received the honor of being named Laywoman of the Year at TPCC. Jane enjoyed cooking and baking (especially known for her pies and chocolate chip cookies), quilting, reading and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Joan Monts, Avon, Connecticut; Charles and Michelle Monts, Poway, California; daughters and son-in-law, Linda and Richard Richardson, Milton, Florida; Barbara Monts, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California; brothers and sister-in-law, Warren and Dorothy Lionberger, Chatham, Illinois; Dean Lionberger, Lawrenceville, Illinois; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents and husband, Allen S. Monts.

Funeral service will be Saturday May 12, 2012 at 10:30 am at Pulliam Funeral Home, Robinson, Illinois. Burial will be in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, rural Annapolis, Illinois. There will be visitation Friday May 11, 2012 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Pulliam Funeral Home, Robinson, Illinois. Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army or to the Torrey Pines Christian Church, La Jolla, California with envelopes available at the funeral home.
