Life Legacy

Mr. Joseph C. "Joe" Smitley, age 86, of Robinson, Illinois,died Friday December 14, 2012 at Crawford Memorial Hospital, Robinson, Illinois, following several years of declining health.

Born December 7, 1926 in Clark Center, Clark County, Illinois, the son of Alonzo "Tom" and Martha (Colclasure) Smitley. On May 29, 1948, he married Leota D. (Blankenbecker) and she survives. Joe was employed as a Kiln Foreman for Briggs Pottery for 20 years and was a lifelong Crawford County Farmer; served in the U.S. Navy in WWII; was a member of the Highland Church of Christ, Robinson, Illinois; Sunday School Teacher, Deacon and Elder and former Chairman of the Board of Elders at Highland Church of Christ, Robinson, Illinois; member and past President of the Crawford County Farm Bureau and a member of the Kansas School Board, Kansas, Illinois for three years.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Leota D. Smitley, Robinson, Illinois; sons & daughters-in-law, Steven and Jeanie Smitley, Robinson, Illinois; Robert "Bob" and Rose Smitley, Terre Haute, Indiana; Brent and Diana Smitley, Robinson, Illinois; brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Carol Smitley, Indianapolis, Indiana; brothers-in-law and spouses, Winifred and Norma Blankenbecker, Willow Hill, Illinois; Ralph Blankenbecker, Martinsville, Illinois; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mrs. Maxine Lovell, Ashmore, Illinois; Mrs. Thelma Herrington, Paris, Illinois; Mrs. Janice Beavers, Kansas, Illinois; sister-in-law, Mrs. Marilyn Parcel, Morton, Illinois; four grandchildren, Angie and Tom Pfiefer, Oblong, Illinois; Brian and Crystal Smitley, Robinson, Illinois; Stephanie and Jon Strader, Westfield, Illinois; Beth and Jon Nelson, Charleston, Illinois; three step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; an infant granddaughter; a brother, Layle; two sisters, Frances McGuinn and Louise Gilbert; seven brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.

Funeral services will be Tuesday December 18, 2012 at 10:30 am at Pulliam Funeral Home, Robinson, Illinois, with Bro. Mike Laflin and Bro. Phil Young officiating. Visitation will be Monday December 17, 2012 from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Pulliam Funeral Home, Robinson, Illinois. Military Funeral Honors will be accorded at the graveside. Burial will be in Medsker Cemetery, rural Martinsville, Illinois. Memorial Donations may be made to Parkinson's Disease Foundation for Research with envelopes available at the funeral home.
