LOUISE PURCELL, AGE 89

Louise Purcell, 89, Carbondale, IL formerly of Oblong, IL passed away on Wednesday November 8, 2017 at Century Assisted Living in Carbondale, IL.

Born in Oblong, IL on August 17, 1928 she was the daughter of George and Elisie (Curtis) Hargis. On October 17, 1946 she married Robert “Gene” Purcell who preceded her in death on April 6, 2010.

Louise work for the Oblong Community Unit 4 School District in the District Office from August 1966 until her retirement on September 30, 1996. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Oblong and the Oblong High School Class of 1946. For several years Louise served on the Oblong Schools Academic Foundation in many positions. She was also very active in her church.  Louise enjoyed traveling, reading and flower gardening.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law Mike and Sharon Purcell, Carbondale, IL; two grandchildren John and Lori Falk, Indianapolis, IN, Josh Furlow, Anna, IL and two great-grandchildren Jarod Falk and Anna Falk both of Indianapolis, IN. Louise is also survived by a brother-in-law and sister-in-law Carl and Janice Purcell, Willow Hill, IL; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Louise Miller, Yorktown, VA, Mrs. Clinton (Carol) Purcell, Teutopolis, IL and Mrs. Ronnie (Gloria) Purcell, Merritt Island, FL along with several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Gene Purcell, daughter Linda A. Purcell and brother Max Hargis.

A Celebration of Louise’s Life will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday November 12, 2017 at Pulliam Funeral Home Oblong, IL, with visitation Sunday from 1:00 PM until time of service at 3:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Oblong Cemetery, Oblong, IL. In lieu of flowers the family request that an expression of sympathy may take the form of a contribution to the Oblong Schools Academic Foundation with envelopes available at or may be mailed to Pulliam Funeral Home P.O. Box 121 Oblong, IL 62449.

Mike & Sis - I am so sorry for your loss. Just know that she is with her husband and her daughter and she is happy and at peace. Mike you are a good son and you have done everything in your power for her these last few years. She is now in a better place. Love to you both.
