EMILY CAROL (SMITH) SCARPONE, Oct. 10, 1931 – Apr. 6, 2017

Born and raised in Robinson Carol was the only child on Vic and Aggie Smith.  An alum of Robinson High School Carol graduated from Stevens College Missouri in 1951 and began work at the Paris Beacon News newspaper. There she met her future husband Sam who was playing minor league baseball on The Paris Lakers. They were married in Robinson April 1956. Settling in Springfield Ill. Carol soon had her hands full managing a home with three young sons. Leaving dear friends behind the couple moved to Deerfield Ill. in 1966. Carol soon made new lifelong friends enjoying tennis, bridge, school functions and the DAR. In 1981 Carol and Sam returned to Robinson assuming ownership of her family legacy The Argus Printing House and newspaper. As distaff editor Carol was excited to return to her roots as a writer and publishing the paper each week until they retired in 2003. Aside from her work at the Argus Carol was passionate about history and genealogy through the Crawford County Museum and The DAR in which she held various offices including her chapters' Regent. Carol and Sam were active members of St. Mary's Episcopal Church until moving to assisted living in Indianapolis where Alzheimer’s claimed her life. Her mind is now clear and she is at peace with the Lord.

Carol is survived by her husband of 61 years Sam, her sons Vic (Dona), Samuel Bradley, Greg (Laura), Grandsons Sammy and Vic, Granddaughters Jessy, Maddie and Anna.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday April 29, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Pulliam Funeral Home, Robinson, IL, with visitation from 12:00 Noon until time of service.

Sorry to hear about Carol.
Remember one time on a busy Monday morning. I was typing away at all the articles put in my box. Sam saw I was at work and started telling me of what he wanted first, then next, then we had printing jobs to type up etc. etc. Carol would hear him talking and talking and she's holler back from her desk. "Sam, go do something! leave Sue alone, and let her get her work done!! So he'd turn around and go to the back to find something to do. Sure do miss working there, always something going on. I miss Sam and Carol. Wish you well Sam.

We were most fortunate to have Carol on the Beacon-News editorial staff - and so was her future husband Sam, or they might never have met. The Beacon is gone, so is the Argus, and now also Carol. Sorry for our loss.

Sam and family,

I remember so fondly the times we had at St Mary's and what a wonderful friend both of you were to my mother.

Dear Sam and family,
My deepest sympathy for Carol's loss. I always enjoyed talking with both of you at the Argus. Carol reminded me so much of her mother, Aggie. I miss her, and Vic, too. I also miss the news and historical stories of their family's newspaper, the late, great Robinson Argus.
Sincerely, Kim C. Cox

Dear Sam:
Betty Anderson Olson is "thinking of you. Lives in Illinois. Remembering our days at Duraclean. And thinking of our unfinished business."
I am a cousin of Betty's and am posting this on her behalf as she does not have online access. I am happy to relay any message to her on your behalf. - Meridith
