VERA MAE KIRTS, AGE 85

Vera Mae Kirts, 85, of Oblong, IL, passed away on Friday February 12, 2016 at the Newton Care Center, Newton, IL.

Born on March 7, 1930 in Newton, IL, she was the daughter of William O. “Bill” Jenkins and Mabel J. (Oliver) Jenkins.  On August 21, 1954 she married the love of her life, Henry Fredrick Kirts and they were married for 61 years.

Vera was a Registered Nurse for many years.  She worked as Director of Nursing at Newton Rest Haven in Newton, IL retiring in 1988 after working; there for 21 years.  Vera also worked at Crawford Memorial Hospital in Robinson, IL and Weber Medical Clinic in Olney, IL.  She was a member of the Newton High School Class of 1948 and a graduate of St. John’s School of Nursing in Springfield, IL in 1951, was an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Oblong, IL as well as a member of the Altar Society.  Vera enjoyed camping, traveling, taking care of others, reading and especially enjoyed dancing.  She and Fred attended dances all over the area.

Survivors include her husband Henry Fred Kirts, Oblong, IL; a son and daughter-in-law Mark and Tammy Kirts, Lafayette, TN; a daughter Ann Kirts, Oblong, IL; granddaughter Amy and David Daughtry Portland, TN, grandson Matthew and Nicole Kirts, Murfreesboro, TN and grandson Joshua and Casey Kirts, Benton, KY; two great-granddaughters Emma Daughtry and Renley Kirts; two great-grandsons Blake Daughtry and Elijah Kirts; a brother and sister-in-law William “Bill” and Carol Jenkins, Florida; a sister and brother-in-law Shirley and Leonard Sanders, Flat Rock, IL as well as several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; an infant daughter Amy Jean Kirts; a son Michael Joseph “Mike” Kirts; a sister Rose Mary “Rosie” Whightsel and several aunt, uncles and cousins.

There will be a Funeral Mass held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Oblong, IL, with Father Aloysius Okey Ndeanaefo officiating. Visitation will be Monday February 15, 2016 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Pulliam Funeral Home, Oblong, IL.  Burial  will be in the Ste. Marie Cemetery, St. Marie, IL.

EXPRESSIONS OF SYMPATHY: may take the form of a contribution to the Greater Illinois Chapter Alzheimer’s Association for their annual walk for the cure of Alzheimer’s or Oblong Schools Academic Foundation with envelopes at the church, funeral home or may be mailed to Pulliam Funeral Home, PO Box 121, Oblong, IL 62449.
