Mr. Donald Eugene “Gene” Ballew Sr., age 83, of Robinson, IL, died Monday October 19, 2015 in the Emergency Room of Crawford Memorial Hospital, Robinson, IL, following several months of failing health.

Born March 13, 1932 in Robinson, IL, he was the son of Jesse Owen and Edna Jane (Liston) Ballew.  On January 10, 1952 he married Hazel “Alberta” (Fitts) and she survives.

Gene served in the US Army for 25 years and was a recipient of the Purple Heart Award.  He was the Owner and Operator of a Zephyr Filling Station; worked for Stewart Security, Inc., Marathon Refinery Security; and worked for Zink Plumbing and Heating in Robinson, IL.  He was a member of the Prairie Grove Baptist Church, Annapolis, IL; EM Coulter Post #69, American Legion, Robinson, IL; Life member VFW Post #4549, Robinson, IL; member Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie #3329 and Life Member of the Disable American Veterans.  

Survivors include his wife, H. Alberta Ballew, Robinson, IL; sons and daughters-in-law, Donald E. and Valerie Ballew Jr., Olympia, WA; Fred W. Ballew and friend Lisa Vanetta, Robinson, IL; daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Bill Russell, Newton, IL; Gisela and Lee Zink, Robinson, IL; Karen and Cleatus Rector, Robinson, IL; seventeen grandchildren; twenty three plus one, great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a great-granddaughter, Alexis Rector, 1999; a step-grandson, Bobby Zink.

Twilight Funeral service will be held Friday October 23, 2015 at 5:00 PM at Pulliam Funeral Home, Robinson, IL, with Pastor Mike Irvin officiating.  Visitation will be Friday October 23, 2015 from 2:00 PM until time of services at 5:00 PM at the funeral home.  There will be Veterans Military Rites provided by EM Coulter Post #69, American Legion and VFW Post #4549, at the funeral home following the Twilight Funeral Service on Friday October 23, 2015.  Cremation will follow services.

Memorial donations may be made to Honor Flight with envelopes available at the funeral home.

I am sorry to hear of your father's passing. I remember him as a smart and kind man. I know that you have those qualities too and must have gotten them from him. Please know that you are in my thoughts, and you can expect me to call you in the next couple days to see how you are doing.
