Life Legacy


Jack M. Gabbert, minister, age 70 of Oblong, Illinois, died Tuesday March 13, 2012 at his residence in Oblong, Illinois. He was born November 2, 1941, in McAlester, Oklahoma, the son of Oliver Boyd and Elizabeth Alois (Bross) Gabbert. On February 13, 1960 he married Phyllis A. (McIntosh) and she survives. Jack was a minister for many years serving mostly in the Midwest; was a member of the First Christian Church, Oblong, Illinois; received his Bachelor of Sacred Literature from Ozark Christian College, Joplin, Missouri. His hobbies included Ham Radio, Golf, Nascar, Drag Racing, Camping, NCAA Football and he especially was a big fan of Oklahoma and Nebraska. He enjoyed being with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis A. Gabbert, Oblong, Illinois; daughters and sons-in-law, Jackie Finley, Yukon, Oklahoma, Julie and Brian Schmitt, Oblong, Illinois, Judie and Dee Wolfe, Oblong, Illinois; brother and sister-in-law, Eddy and Liz Gabbert, New Bern, NC; seven grandchildren, Nicole Funck and Drew Funck, Yukon, Oklahoma, Joshua and Karie Schmitt, Rapid City, South Dakota, Rachel Schmitt, Robinson, Illinois, Courtney Schmitt, Oblong, Illinois, Erica and Ricky Barnbrook, Robinson, Illinois, Jackson Wolfe, Oblong, Illinois; four great-grandchildren, Tyler Barnes, Calumet, Oklahoma, Marlee Shaver, Yukon, Oklahoma, Diamond and Kade Barnbrook, Robinson, Illinois along with one nephew and two nieces.

A public celebrations of Jack's life will be at 1:00 PM on Friday March 16, 2012 at the First Christian Church of Oblong, Illinois with Ron Culp and David Haynes officiating. There will be a private family graveside service. The family will receive friends following the celebration of Jack's life at the church. Memorial donations may be made to the Ozark Christian College with envelopes available at the funeral home.
